Friends of New Brighton Marine Lake are a group of local people committed to keeping the Lake clean and safe for the enjoyment of all. The group was formally constituted last year, recognising that the lake was deteriorating and at risk of another outbreak of blue-green algae.
Our mission is to protect and improve the water quality of the lake. We advocate on behalf of the hundreds of people who regularly use the lake. As well as a swimming and paddleboarding, the Lake is the focal point for many other community activities, such as regular clean-ups, outdoor Qigong, filming, photography, rockpooling, beach games.
The Friends work closely with other groups, especially Reluctant Runners and the Friends of Victoria Quarter, and local businesses such as Safe Water, Wallasey Yacht Club, Wallasey Beach CIC, and Coastal Communities.
The outdoor swimmers movement in New Brighton really took off in 2017, when a small group of swimmers began meeting at the Marine Lake each morning. Today, there are hundreds of people using the lake every day, whatever the weather, gathering to chat and swim and dip together, building friendships and community, and improving mental health and wellbeing in the process.
Whether you just want to dip, or swim distances in cold water, everyone is made welcome, and newcomers are always looked after.
Unfortunately, the water quality of the lake has been deteriorating, often full of debris and rubbish, green and brackish. We are taking action to reverse this decline. Step by step, we are working to ensure that the lake is maintained as a free and safe resource for everyone, for years to come.
