Spirit of the Lake

New Mural ‘Spirit of the Lake’ Brings Vibrant Art to New Brighton’s Marine Lake

A bold and innovative new mural, Spirit of the Lake, is set to transform the interior wall of New Brighton’s Marine Lake, just above the waterline. This large-scale artwork will  interplay with the natural movement of the water to create  a dynamic and immersive visual experience.

Led by the Friends of New Brighton Marine Lake who have been working with renowned local artist Joe Forrest, the mural has been developed in collaboration with young people and community volunteers. Together, they have created a design that celebrates the 90th anniversary of the lake,  and draws attention to the town’s rich coastal heritage.

The Marine Lake, a key feature of New Brighton’s coastal defences, is ever-changing—sometimes wild and powerful, at other times serene and reflective. Spirit of the Lake captures this shifting energy, channeling it into a bold and engaging artwork that enhances the beauty of this much-loved space.

Beyond its aesthetic impact, the mural will provide a significant visual uplift, brightening the lake and its surroundings. Designed to be seen from all sides, the artwork is inspired by key themes from the lake’s legacy, including environmental conservation, wildlife, mythical creatures, and water quality improvement.

As one of the most important cultural assets in New Brighton, the marine lake continues to be a focal point for both visitors and the local community. Spirit of the Lake—created as part of the Borough of Culture celebrations—will serve as a powerful new landmark, reinforcing the marine lake’s status as one of the town’s most cherished cultural spaces. It will also connect the seafront to other areas of regeneration in New Brighton such as the mural artwork in its vibrant Victoria Quarter. This stunning new attraction marks a step forward in the area’s ongoing transformation, celebrating its past while looking toward an exciting future.

Prior to the artworks installation, a section of the new mural will be showcased in the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, opposite the lake from 2nd May 2025 For more information, please contact:
